Exodus 40:34-38

What does it truly mean to follow God rather than simply invite Him along for the ride? Drawing from the closing verses of Exodus 40, we explore one of the most profound moments in the entire story of Israel -- the instant when the glory of the Lord descended and filled the tabernacle. This was not merely a religious ceremony. It was the culmination of a journey that took God's people from slavery under Pharaoh, through the chaos of following their own desires in the wilderness, and finally into life ordered around the presence of God Himself. The arc of that journey mirrors our own. We begin enslaved to sin, we wrestle with self-will even after finding freedom, and we are ultimately called into something far greater -- a life shaped not by our own plans but by the movement of God. The cloud moved, and Israel moved. The cloud stayed, and Israel stayed. Their entire existence was reoriented around where God was going. That same invitation stands before us today, and it challenges us to ask honestly whether we are following Jesus or simply expecting Jesus to follow us.
