Deuteronomy 6:5
This powerful exploration of Deuteronomy 6:5 challenges us to reconsider what it truly means to love God with all our heart, soul, and strength. The Shema, recited daily by Jewish people for thousands of years and likely by Jesus himself, calls us into something far deeper than emotional feelings. We discover that biblical love is covenantal love, a relational commitment that mirrors marriage more than fleeting sentiment. The heart represents our command center, the place where decisions are made and our will is directed. The soul encompasses our entire being, everything we are. Our strength or might includes all our resources, efforts, and abilities, both internal and external. Together, these three dimensions call us to be all in, fully invested in our relationship with God. The challenge for us as modern disciples is resisting the temptation to compartmentalize our faith, giving God only pieces of our lives while holding back control over our schedules, thoughts, resources, or relationships. This verse invites us to examine those corners of our lives we've kept from God's influence and to practice daily surrender, remembering that God loves us first and fully, enabling us to respond with complete devotion.
